   I disagree. Relationships are hard work regardless of how much you may love each other or how “right” you are for each other. Nothing comes easy and if it does then you’re probably not getting the most out of it. I think that socialized romanticized idea of relationships is naive bullshit

   Frankie. That’s still incredibly bogus. Every relationship requires work to some degree. Maybe if we lived in a utopian world, relationships would all be perfect and wouldn’t reqquire work ever. But it would be contrary to human nature for two people to get along so perfectly that no work would be required to keep those two people madly in love forever. It just doesn’t happen that way.

   if one found a “perfect love” it would be over faster then a minute man during an encounter with a geisha. Imperfection is what makes things interesting…perfection is reprehensible to most of us, not to mention BORING. That aside, love is tricky and the bad times almost always outway the good.

   In other words, Ava, you’re saying that being involved in a dead-end relationship at least has some livelihood to it because there’s an exciting chance that you may or may not work out in the end; whereas, on the other hand, a truly happy and loving couple involved in a working relationship don’t have that looming uncertainty. Somehow I’d like to disagree with you.

   While it is true that relationships that are “right” may require “work” from time to time, you will find that this work is done without much notice, and often done because the rightness of the relationship is worth it. The implication that sacrifice is a necessary component of a quality relationship is patently absurd. Sacrifice suggests being something other then who you are, and any relationship which carries with it a penalty of not being who you truly are sucks.

    Perhaps I’ve been unlucky enough to have had to sacrifice being who I truly am and that’s why my view of love is jaded…however, I’m not sure that’s the case. EVERY relationship contains sacrifice, that’s what love is all about, sacrificing something (whether it is a part of one’s self or one’s goals) that in the end proves your devotion. Giving up something because it’s not as important as your lover…real love ( I won’t say “true” because that denotes absolute, and lets face it, nothing in this world is concrete and unwavering) is not all together happy. One can’t be friends with someone for years without getting into some really tough situations with each other, to the point where sometimes you want to give it up or at the very least strangle them. But you get over it. And THAT very element is what makes love love special. I think it’s the imperfections, the hurdles towards understanding, that makes love worth while. We get bored when things are easy, at least the intelligent people do. Which I believe everyone here is. But I think to imply that real love has no sacrifice is a bunch of bull sh*t. Honestly, if any of you have been with someone for over three years can you say with a straight face that it’s EASY? And you say “work” Doc, as if that’s not what it really is. Like it’s not work because you love someone else. But even love pushes the limits and it’s a test of strength, perhaps the greatest we face, to devote ourselves without temptation or anger. And no, Navid, I didn’t really mean a dead end relationship, I kinda’ meant all relationships. I don’t think it’s possible to be certain about something or someone. It’s possible to be faithful, and devoted to giving it your all, but there is always temptation. There are plenty of couples who have been together long enough ( we’re talking at least six or seven years here) who know it’s the end of the road and that ther e is no looming uncertainty of their future. But that doesn’t make them happy, and it doesn’t make it easy. I think most people just tend to give up after being with someone for so long, and understand that things are the way the are, that person simply is the way they are, and in the end what they have is most important. But that’s still not easy. I think if you want to find real love you have to give up the fairy tale. It doesn’t exist.
