Die Firefox Die

Ok, so die may be too strong of a word here, but Firefox and I have a love-hate relationship. I adore Firefox for what it is and what it stands for but ever since v1.0, Firefox has become a growing nuisance and is, frankly, driving me nuts. I have a major problem on several of my computers running Windows and Firefox.

Specifically, I have major problems copy and pasting text and/or URLs from Firefox. I am not sure if this is a widespread problem or if it has anything to do with any extensions I have installed (which generally are only 3 or 4) but it is really really aggravating to have to highlight and copy something at least 10 times before the copy will stick. And yes — I have tried all sorts of different combinations the menu bars, context menu, shortcut keys, etc. All to no avail.

If anyone has heard or experienced this problem and has a solution please send it this way. I do not recall having these problems on Firefox 0.93. For what it is worth, I run Windows XP Pro on the laptop and Windows 2003 Server both on the desktops at home and at the office, respectively. I run into this problem at least several times a week pretty much sporadically — and as such — tracking it down has become pretty much impossible.

Hmm… I haven’t had that problem before (and I run Firefox on both Win 2k and Win XP Pro systems). Wonder what’s causing it…

I have never run into this problem before but I will try and find a problem/solution for you. There is actually an extension which automatically copies your text to the clipboard, which may be of help. Check it out here.

You know what? I thought I was the only one. I actually happen to have the same problem as well. It really aggravates me. I copy something and then I close firefox and when I try to paste it somewhere, it’s gone. POOF. So then I have to go back and copy it and make sure its copied and then paste it where I want. I didn’t have this problem with the pre 1.0 versions. Hmm…

I have installed the “Copy Plain Text” extension and am going to see if I encounter the same problems. But as Nima stated, there is actually a bug in Firefox. And the reason I can make this assertion is that I am running Firefox on three different machines and I run into the same behavior — so unless my configuration or environment just happens to be identical it’s Firefox choking. Thanks again for the ideas. I’ll keep looking and report back any issues.

I am no IE die-hard, but FireFox actually sucks. It’s only redeeming feature is tabbed-browsing, but if really, really, really can’t live without that, go for Opera or an IE plug-in.

My experience with Firefox:
- It was slooooooow. I ran it on 2 different machines. Probably due to the chubby Java run-time.
- It is ugly-looking software. I felt like I was back in heyday of Lotus 1-2-3.
- The only reason to use it was because it wasn’t IE.
- Copy and paste clipboard problems, just like everyone above mentions.

Anyway, I’ve purged that nuisance from my boxes forever.

I agree that it is an actual bug. However, if you find a way around the bug or the bug itself then you can fix the problem.

Not something I’ve experinced on Windows, but I have noticed that problem on the linux box I use at work. However, it’s almost a boat anchor, so I usually assume that it’s just being idiotic again.

The plot thickens. So if this is going on — in both — Linux and Windows I would assume it should be reported on a much broader scale? Alas, the nature and randomness of this bug, make it exceptionally difficult to narrow down. I hope it gets fixed soon. Until then, I am experimenting with the “Copy Plain Text” extension.

umm, i run firefox on windows and linux, and i have been doing so since version 0.6. i had this problem for awhile during 0.7, but they fixed it when i finally upgraded to 0.9. Have you tried doing a clean install of firefox?

Hey Nat, thanks for your comments. I am not sure if it has anything to do with the installation since I am experiencing this problem on three different machines: laptop, home desktop and work desktop. But I will attempt to uninstall and reinstall Firefox later this week when I get a chance.

i love firefox but alas like everything else in life, it’s not perfect.

my pet peeve is now that i’ve installed several extensions, my context menu has grown — and a result, various menu options are option off the screen (i have widescreen which compounds the problem). continually i have to reposition the page to make a context menu option visible.

i have also experienced ‘click failure’ or a repeated failure to select a menu option. i’m not sure if this is what you’re experiencing or not. it happens to me with the options i use most — copy link to clipboard and copy as plain text.
